I was born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey and lived for
many years in East Molesey (near Hampton Court).
It was a typical community of the 1940s and 50s - both sets of grandparents
lived within a 5 minute walk, as did a number of aunts, uncles and
cousins. Most of us were members at East Molesey Methodist Church
where most social activity took place and as a child I found it difficult
to establish in my mind which ‘aunts’ were actual relations and which were
just family friends.
I attended Surbiton
School for Boys from 1949-51, and then received a Surrey
CC ‘assisted place’ at Charterhouse
Public School, where
I was a boarder from 1951-56. I became a ‘Gownboy’ House Monitor and
a School ‘Library Monitor’ and failed to distinguish myself at any games
although I was the 1st eleven cricket scorer and an intrepid umpire.
My tastes were more to painting oil pictures (of trains) in the art studio
or developing the small school Railway Society into a force to be reckoned
I attend the annual Gownboy dinners as often as I can and
belong to the Old Carthusian Association of those working in the City - I
count my London based Board charity meetings as qualifying me for this!
I became a student on the German Language & Literature course in 1957
and graduated in 1960. I specialised in my second year on ‘Stylistic
analysis of twelfth and thirteenth century German epic poetry’ which fitted
me (of course) for a career in the railway industry. I lived at
home (in Woking) during this period and
commuted daily by train. I was a member of the college ‘Meth Soc’ at
the Hinde Street
chapel and the college Railway Society and an enthusiastic member of the
college 3rd league Table Tennis team. We even got promoted to the 2nd
league in my final year.
I’m trying to contact former members of the Department via
the College Alumni network to see if we can arrange a reunion sometime - if
any of you see this, e-mail me at Maidmentrail@aol.com
I am married to Pat and have three adult children, Helen, Catherine and
Chris plus three small grandchildren, Emma and Sophia in Nairobi
and Joel in Manchester.
I live in Nantwich, Cheshire.
